According to a recent report on Bloomberg, Nintendo may soon be coming out with a newer version of the Nintendo Switch console. The source of the information comes from employees that work for Samsung Display Co. who wish to remain nameless. These anonymous informants say that Samsung is partnering with Nintendo to create a 7-inch OLED screen for the new Switch with 720p-resolution. Also providing “4K ultra-high definition graphic” output on TV screens, gaming media pundits have unofficially dubbed this product the Nintendo Switch Pro, a Switch console with upgraded specs compared to the original model released in 2017.

Analysts at Bloomberg, Matthew Kanterman and Nathan Naidu, posited, “The release of a more premium version of Nintendo’s Switch console with an OLED display and support for 4K graphics for the holiday 2021 selling season could drive the company’s sales above consensus for the fiscal year ending March 2022 and extend the life cycle of the Switch platform for many more years.” With Samsung’s 7-inch screens scheduled to ship for assembly in July of this year, a Switch Pro released during the 2021 holiday season seems possible.

Bloomberg reached out to Nintendo and Samsung for comments, but both companies declined to do so. It’s also important to note that the President of Nintendo, Shuntaro Furukawa, just stated in February that Nintendo has no plans to announce a new Switch “anytime soon.”

To date, approximately 80 million units of the original Nintendo Switch have been sold worldwide, according to Nintendo’s official Japanese website.
